Many of the homes along College Avenue between Sumter and Myrtle Drive were owned by Winthrop College and occupied by staff and professors from the college. The street remained a residential area until the mid 1960′s when then, President Charles S. Davis began an expansion plan including the closure of WTS, building a new student building, demolition of the housing along College Avenue and building the new Winthrop Library on the lawn of WTS.

History: While we are on the subject of moving houses, we should not forget about the two frame houses that once stood at the northwest corner of East White and Oakland Avenue. The house closer to Oakland Avenue was built early in the century by Mr. and Mr. John R. Williams. This large residence, with marble bathrooms, was eventually sold to Mr. and Mr. W. W. Gill. They employed Mr. Stearns to move the house to St. John‘s Court—the southernmost lot on that short street—where it stood until the site for many years. [Along the Lands Ford Road, Vol., I and HRH]

The Herald reported in it’s centennial edition of May 3, 1952 that John R. Williams is the oldest real estate agent in town. he started with J. Edgar Poag in 1904 as an office boy.
